What is a Lumber Puncture?

A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a medical procedure used to collect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for testing. CSF is a clear fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. It can help diagnose various neurological conditions and infections.

Why is a Lumbar Puncture Performed?

Lumbar punctures are performed for several reasons, including:

  • Diagnosing infections: Meningitis, encephalitis, and other infections can be identified by examining the CSF for bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
  • Detecting diseases: Multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other neurological diseases can be indicated by the presence of abnormal cells or proteins in the CSF.
  • Monitoring conditions: Lumbar punctures can be used to track the progression of certain diseases or the effectiveness of treatment.
  • Measuring pressure: Increased pressure within the skull (intracranial pressure) can be assessed by measuring the pressure of the CSF.

How is a Lumbar Puncture Performed at Sharma Clinic?

At Sharma Clinic, our experienced team of medical professionals conducts lumbar punctures in a safe and comfortable environment. The procedure typically involves the following steps:

  1. Preparation: You will be asked to lie on your side with your knees drawn up towards your chest.
  2. Numbing: The area around your lower back will be numbed with a local anesthetic.
  3. Insertion: A thin needle is inserted between two vertebrae in your lower back.
  4. Collection: CSF is slowly collected into a sterile container.
  5. Removal: The needle is removed, and a small bandage is applied to the puncture site.

After the Procedure

You will be monitored for a short time after the lumbar puncture to ensure there are no complications. It is generally recommended to rest for the rest of the day. Mild discomfort or a headache may occur for a short period, but these symptoms can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
